　　The rapid consumption of fossil fuels has been an economic and environmental issue around the world, and some people suggest that we exploit natural resources available in some isolated and unspoiled areas. I do not agree with this point of view because it does more harm than good.

　　The search for oil and natural gas in remote areas can help meet the global demand for energy. The use of these resources has increased at a fast pace worldwide because of industrialization and our overreliance on private car use, air transport and electrical appliances. If resources can be found in these far-flung areas, we may have sufficient oil and natural gas to satisfy our needs such as the use of natural gas for electricity generation.

　　On the other hand, oil extraction in these regions can also pose a threat to local ecosystem. Oil drilling projects normally require people to build facilities such as pipelines, which can cause damage to natural habitats of wild animals. Another problem is that oil extraction can create chemical waste, thereby resulting in water pollution and contaminating soil. These projects, as well as those for natural gas production, can destroy the ecological balance and have a harmful effect on us.

　　Because of these projects, we may also fail to search for other ways to fill energy needs and alleviate the environmental impact of our activities.  Many people may hold the view that reserves of crude oil and natural gas are infinite and can be found in distant places.   They may rely on such resources continuously, instead of developing alternative energy sources, until these resources are depleted.  It can be anticipated that facilities can be abandoned and have a lasting impact on local environment .

　　In conclusion, the disadvantages of exploring some untouched areas for energy sources far outweigh advantages. It is pointless to maintain oil supplies by damaging those areas, while some other options are available.
