The restoration of old buildings in major cities around the world requires enormous expenditure. Some people think the money should be spent on providing new housing and roads. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Admittedly, many governments, in contemporary world, are spending a great deal of tax payers’ money on restoring some historical buildings. As a result, some of tax payers argue that doing so is obviously the waste of financial resources, and those funds from governments ought to be utilized for constructing new housing and roads. From my perspective, why those people are having this misconception is because they for certain ignore what those old buildings mean to people.

Primarily, old buildings are definitely historically meaningful for our society. Those buildings constructed many years ago witnessed quite a few significant historical events. Visiting buildings like this can remind people of what happened long time ago, cultivate people’s interest in history, and impart them historical knowledge and philosophy. On top of this, those buildings embody the wisdom of our ancestors. Historians nowadays are able to research traditions, customs and cultures in the ancient time by analyzing the architecture, raw materials and design of old buildings. Most importantly, those buildings are playing irreplaceable roles for the promotion and inheritance of our cultures and history. After being restored, those buildings can serve as tourist attractions in order to let visitors from all over the world have a chance to be close to our cultures and history.

On the other hand, unquestionably building new housing and roads are able to facilitate residents’ lives and elevate their living standards. With the unprecedented trend of urbanization, the population of major cities is ever-increasing. To accommodate more people, cities surely require more housing. Similarly, roads as infrastructure for traffic are certainly needed as well.

In summary, it is undoubted that the fiscal plan of governments should cover both expenditures for restoring old buildings and constructing new housing and roads. It is distinctly harebrained and ill-considered that governments embezzle the funds for old buildings to invest in new housing and roads.
